Press Release: WatchGuard Protects Students While Leveraging Latest Learning Technology

WatchGuard Protects Students While Leveraging Latest Learning Technology

Franklin County Board of Education, Chester School District and Portsmouth Grammar School rely on WatchGuard to protect and optimize their learning environments

SEATTLE – May 3, 2016 — Schools, no matter whether they’re pre-K or higher learning, want to accomplish two things: provide the best education possible, and create a safe learning environment for students. That is why so many learning institutions all over the world are taking advantage of WatchGuard® Technologies’ content filtering and secure wireless solutions. A leader in multi-function integrated security appliances, WatchGuard provides wireless access points and firewalls that have had a significant impact on network safety and performance for Franklin County Board of Education (FCBOE), Chester School District (CSD) and Portsmouth Grammar School (PGS) and their respective communities.

Ensuring Reliable and Safe Internet Access for Franklin County Schools, and Residents

Tucked into the hills of rural Northwest Alabama, Internet access in Franklin County is so rare that only an estimated 20 percent of students have it at home. To best serve their community, the board of education needs to provide access to reliable and secure Wi-Fi for their students to keep up with emerging learning trends. FCBOE turned to WatchGuard for a solution that provides security services tailored specifically for their needs.

“The school board can’t afford to hire a huge staff, so it’s essential to have a system and appliances that are easily manageable, and that’s what WatchGuard does for us,” said Tim Burks, network administrator at FCBOE.

With WatchGuard’s firewalls, secure wireless access points, and cloud-based logging and reporting tool, Dimension, they can identify key trends across all wired and wireless activity in the district, providing valuable insight into Internet usage to help prevent student exposure to inappropriate sites. The schools’ perimeter wireless access points (separate from the internal networks) are so reliable that community members throughout Franklin County park on the school grounds to securely connect to much needed Internet access they cannot get at home.

Better Visibility Means Heightened Security at Chester School District

It’s a story heard in school districts everywhere. In New Jersey’s Chester School District, the IT staff needs to provide Wi-Fi access for more than 1,200 students and 400 staff members, and their many devices. The district must be able to maintain control over web applications, block websites with malicious material and inappropriate content, and stay compliant with the Children’s Internet Protection Act (CIPA).

“The ease of access to information and the intuitive platform provided by WatchGuard has freed up valuable time that, in the past, was spent monitoring and maintaining the previous device,” said Dean Anderson, technology director, CSD. “Now, more time can be spent where it matters—supporting the staff and students.”

Within weeks of deployment, WatchGuard’s reporting tools helped to identify when students attempted to access inappropriate websites and allowed the administration to pinpoint exactly who was involved. Now CSD’s technology team can respond immediately to any security or policy issues they encounter.

Breaking down walls with Secure Wi-Fi at Portsmouth Grammar School

At Portsmouth Grammar School, students are surrounded by history. Based in former army barracks, the fivefoot thick walls of the former Cambridge Barracks stood through a WWII bombing, but were not designed to allow a modern Wi-Fi signal. These rock-solid walls hampered connectivity and made it difficult to provide wireless access to students learning throughout the school’s 300 rooms. Keeping students’ private data secure and blocking unsafe online content were also major points of concern.

WatchGuard set up a robust wireless network comprised of 136 WatchGuard secure wireless access points spread across the school, with one access point in every third room. This solution ensures a strong Wi-Fi signal across every part of the campus. And because they work in tandem with a WatchGuard firewall, users are authenticated as soon as they reach the school grounds, and administration has control over which websites students can access.

“Having a strong Wi-Fi signal throughout the school now means that tutors, students, and visitors have continual access to key resources and communications wherever they are on campus, helping us to deliver the aims of our curriculum,” said James Priory, Headmaster of PGS. “Thanks to WatchGuard, our pupils’ devices are securely, consistently, and easily connected to the school network.”

Aerohive Introduces the Most-Adaptable Wireless Infrastructure Available Today for Connected Enterprises

New Products Double Network Capacity with 802.11ac Wave 2 Everywhere and Unified Wired and Wireless Cloud Management

Sunnyvale, Calif. — April 5, 2016 — Aerohive Networks® (NYSE:HIVE) today announced new 802.11ac Wave 2 access points, a new line of switches, and a new release of HiveManager® NG that together deliver the most-adaptable Wireless infrastructure for the Connected Enterprise.

News Facts

  • New high-performance mobile devices and demanding applications continue to change how connected enterprises do business. With a constantly changing client landscape and new Internet of Things (IoT) devices on the horizon, enterprises are challenged to have network infrastructure for the clients and devices of today while anticipating the connectivity needs of the future.
  • To address escalating connectivity demands today, Aerohive is introducing the AP250 and the AP245X, two new cloud-managed 802.11ac Wave 2 access points that are the first to deliver enterprise-class capabilities and uncompromised wireless functionality while operating on existing standard wired infrastructure of 802.3af Power over Ethernet (PoE). The access points also feature integrated Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE). Both the AP250 and the AP245X are built on Aerohive’s proven RF-IQ technology to deliver great Wi-Fi. RF-IQ incorporates distributed control radio intelligence, such as automated channel and power selection, load balancing, band steering, and other capabilities that enable complex radio functionality.
  • Aerohive’s new AP250 access point enables the most-adaptable wireless infrastructure. Its software-selectable radios maximize customers’ return on investment by allowing administrators to select transmission at 2.4GHz and 5GHz or to select dual 5GHz. When integrated into overall network design, the selection of the dual 5GHz mode can effectively double network capacity.
  • The AP250 is the only Wave 2 and BLE solution that can operate in dual 5GHz mode with uncompromised performance for increased capacity, without PoE switch upgrades. Aerohive’s patent-pending RF-IQ antenna and the first-of-its-kind network technology provide polarization and spatial diversity which ensures performance even in dual 5GHz mode, delivering uncompromised performance under 802.3af power budget.
  • The AP245X delivers Wave 2 with external antennas and a rugged design for challenging environments, such as warehouses, manufacturing floors, and extreme temperature environments.
  • Both the AP250 and the AP245X access points feature integrated BLE and a USB port to enhance location-driven services and provide additional wireless connectivity options for IoT and other devices.
  • HiveManager NG, Aerohive’s network management platform, is designed for enterprise-grade scalability and is available for private or public cloud deployment. The new release is now architected for on-premises deployments of up to 20,000 access points. The platform offers the centralized management and powerful functionality enterprises need as well as streamlined user experience and simplified troubleshooting.
  • Aerohive is also introducing four new cloud-managed enterprise switches, the SR2208P, SR2224P, SR2324P, and SR2348P. Available in a range of port densities, from desktop to stacking-capable rack mount, the new switches are managed through HiveManager NG.
  • Together with Aerohive’s access points, these new switches enable complete unified wired and wireless cloud network management from a single pane of glass with improved visibility, centralized control, and reduced cost and complexity.
  • Furthermore, Aerohive has extended its unique Private Pre-Shared Key (PPSK) functionality, which enables customers to manage secure access for specific users and IoT devices. This functionality is important for ease of onboarding and control of Bring Your Own (BYO) and IoT devices. PPSK can now support 100,000 keys in a single instance.

Comments

“Wi-Fi infrastructure has become indispensable in the day-to-day operations of enterprises around the world, but as new requirements emerge, networks need to adapt,” said Matthias Machowinski, senior research director, IHS. “Aerohive’s most-recent update to its cloud managed wired and wireless portfolio allows enterprises to address new requirements around new applications, IoT initiatives, and high density deployments.”

“The College of William & Mary needs a wireless network robust enough to support the growth in mobile devices, both in the classroom and in residence halls,” said Norman Elton, network engineer, College of William & Mary. “We are eager to deploy the AP250 access points in order to leverage higher density 5GHz coverage. We believe that the software-selectable radio will play a key role in our transition from a network designed for coverage to one designed for capacity.”

“Mobility gives organizations the opportunity to transform how they serve their customers,“ said David Flynn, CEO, Aerohive Networks. “At the same time, new devices and demands often present challenges for network infrastructures. Our new switches, the new release of HiveManager NG, and Wave 2 access points give our customers the performance, flexibility, and power of cloud management needed to adapt to their evolving business demands.”

Aerohive & Dicar Networks Keep City of Morgan Hill Residents Wirelessly Connected Across Six Campuses

Customer OverviewAerohive Wireless Access Points

The City of Morgan Hill is located in southern Santa Clara Valley, just south of San Jose in California. The Valley is approximately four miles wide and is surrounded by the Santa Cruz mountain range to the west, and the Diablo mountain range to the east. Departments spanning across five major campuses service the city. These campuses include Information Services, Civic Center, Aquatics Center, Centennial Recreation Center and the Community & Cultural Center. Due to the City’s progressive and forward thinking planning, Morgan Hill is considered a natural setting for business, providing a balanced environment that inspires innovation and productivity.

Challenges

The City of Morgan Hill has an extremely active Recreational program and provides many community services to its residents including sports, aquatics, a fitness center and more. As a result of the mobile device explosion, the city has seen a large uptick in the amount of devices users bring into environments across campuses. Prior to Aerohive, the city relied on a home office network solution to provide Internet access. This product posed several management issues for the IT department working to keep city wireless connectivity separate from public access to minimize security threats. In addition, this home office solution made it difficult to manage capacity due to extreme fluctuation in use across departments and time of day. Above all, the largest challenge was the city’s restricted IT budget and limited staff. Faced with these challenges, the City of Morgan Hill began their search for a commercial-grade, high performance and easily managed networking solution.

Aerohive Solution

Jeff Rosenberger, Information Services Manager with the City of Morgan Hill, worked closely with Armando Garcia at Dicar in Morgan Hill to evaluate three traditional wireless providers including Meraki, Aruba Networks and Aerohive. In an effort to really get a feel for each product, the city tested solution sets from all three vendors. Specifically, engineers were tasked to deploy each product out of the box with little, to no help from the vendor. Aerohive was ultimately chosen for its controller-less architecture, ease of install and configuration and reliable customer service. The City of Morgan Hill is currently utilizing Aerohive’s AP330’s, AP350’s, AP170’s and HiveManager Online.

Why Was Aerohive Selected

  • Aerohive’s ‘smart’ access points are manufactured with built-in intelligence to operate without a controller and reduce the cost and complexity of deployment.
  • Aerohive’s controller-less architecture provides the City of Morgan Hill with the flexibility to actually move access points to support different capacity in higher dense areas.
  • Aerohive’s HiveManager Online is a centralized network management interface that provides customers with real-time topology, performance and client information to simplify troubleshooting and capacity planning. HiveManager Online is ideal for the City of Morgan Hill because it enables IT to manage their distributed environment with ease.
  • HiveManager Online is an enterprise-class management system delivered as a cloud-enabled service. As a result, it easily scales and is extremely cost effective.

“The beauty with Aerohive is the solution is literally plug-n-play. Supplying network access across five different campuses can be difficult to manage when capacity dramatically fluctuates at different times of the day, or year across our facilities. Due to limited budget, we needed a solution that we could start out with as little as one access point and that would cost effectively scale. The Aerohive solution provided us with this option and through our pilot, we were able to justify cost to City Council and move forward with the entire project area that covered our Aquatics, Recreation and Cultural Centers. With Aerohive, we now have the ability to literally relocate an access point from one place to another and provide more coverage where we need it within a matter of minutes. This kind of flexibility is one of the biggest reasons we went with Aerohive, and we are continuing to expand this solution with our Police Department and Public Works Corporation Yards in the next year.” -Jeff Rosenberger, Information Services Manager, City of Morgan Hill
